After completing his undergraduate degree in music at Occidental College, in California, he received his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Choral Music from the University of Illinois. He has directed choirs in parishes of Russian, Serbian, and Antiochian backgrounds and has taught and lectured widely at church music workshops and conferences. He is Founder and Artistic Director of Archangel Voices, a professional-level choral ensemble dedicated to producing CD's of Orthodox liturgical music in English. His book "Choral Performance in Pre-Revolutionary Russia" (1986) is considered the definitive study of this topic. He is President of Musica Russica, a publishing house specializing in Orthodox and Russian music and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the “Monuments of Russian Sacred Music” series.
