Di Tzouras-Teacher, Naturalist, and Essential Oil Distributor Part 2
Written by Glen Chancy

OB: Give us some background on the science behind your products. Who invented essential oils?

Di: Essential oils, the lifeblood of an aromatic plant and the foundation of our products and our Eleos business, come from nature and thus from our Creator, plain and simple. Since essential oils are from nature, they were not invented per se, but rather they were discovered and rediscovered through the ages as part of nature’s bounty in aromatic (odoriferous) plants. However, the process of growing, harvesting, and distilling the purest aromatic plants, under the best conditions for each individual plant species, has been perfected by Dr. D. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living.

OB: Calling essential oils a plant’s lifeblood intrigues me. What does that mean?

Di: There’s a striking similarity between how essential oils function in plants and how blood functions in our bodies, as stated by Dr. David Stewart in his book, The Chemistry of Essential Oils Made Simple: God’s Love Manifest in Molecules. (Note, all quotes in this interview are from this book.)

Essential oils …circulate through plant tissues and pass through cell walls, carrying nutrition into cells and carrying waste products out.

OB: Do all plants contain essential oils?

Di: No, only aromatic plants have essential oils, although all plants contain vital circulating fluids.

OB: What’s unique about essential oils?

Di: An essential oil, the lipid soluble portion of an aromatic plant species, is beneficial to the plant itself as well as to man and the environment.

When essential oils are applied to people [or animals], they do the same thing, carrying oxygen into cells and carrying waste products out. In fact, essential oils are one of nature’s best body cleansers. They can cleanse our cellular receptor sites of pharmaceutical drugs, petrochemicals, and other disruptors of intercellular communication…They can also chelate heavy metals and other toxins, helping to remove and flush them through the liver, colon, sweat, lungs, and kidneys, [and they] increase our ability to absorb vitamins and other nutrients.

Holistically, essential oils are essential to our lives. Man and woman were created and put in a garden (Genesis 2:8), not a house, where they could constantly breathe essential oils and thus stay balanced and healthy.

OB: Can essential oils be synthesized in a lab?

Di: No, just like an orange or an apple can’t be made in a laboratory, essential oils can’t be synthesized either. Here’s how the expert clarifies this for us:

An essential oil of a single plant species typically contains 100 to 400 different chemical compounds. As for essential oils in general, thousands of different chemical compounds [are] found among them. Because many of these constituents are in trace amounts, there has never been even one essential oil completely analyzed. Thus, the notion of synthetically manufacturing a complete essential oil is out of the question. Chemists have yet to account for all of the ingredients in even one bottle of even one species.

OB: The term therapeutic essential oil is new to me. Is therapeutic a synonym for flavor oil or fragrance oil?

Di: Absolutely not! Only about 5% of essential oils bottled today are therapeutic grade, and all Young Living Oils are in this category.

Of the hundreds of constituents that are contained within a natural, therapeutic grade oil, the fragrance industry is interested only in the few components that contribute to its aroma. The same attitude goes for the flavor industry [and taste]. …[The many components found in balanced proportions in a natural essential oil] and which are responsible for its healing properties, are typically absent from an oil produced for fragrance or flavor. In contrast to therapeutic oils, which are grown organically, [flavor] and fragrance oils are normally distilled from plants cultivated with chemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides. The last three of these are intrinsically toxic and inevitably end up as contaminants in [flavor and fragrance] oils, directly [adversely] affecting their efficacy and safety.

OB: How long can essential oils last?

Di: Centuries! For example in 1922, alabaster jars containing 350 liters of essential oils (about 2200 years old and well-preserved) were found in King Tut’s tomb.

OB: Why do essential oils work so effectively?

Di: Dr. Stewart explains it so clearly.

The action of essential oils inside the human body is always toward balance, … the state of homeostasis where every organ and cell is working properly and in harmony. Therapeutic grade essential oils have homeostatic intelligence, something neither synthetic oils nor pharmaceuticals possess.

OB: How do you feel about essential oils?

Di: For more than a decade, I have been amazed by the awesome results I have experienced with Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils. They make me feel energized, enthused, enlivened, and empowered. I love them, enjoy them, and use them many times and in many ways daily.

OB: How do essential oils help you?

Di: They help me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Although I vary the particular oils that I use from day to day, I do follow a routine of sorts.

OB: What type of routine do you follow with essential oils?

Di: Every morning I take a bath with a drop or two of an oil such as frankincense or balsam fir, and the room is instantly turned into a spa. My nose is cleared, my senses are awakened, and my mood is balanced for the day ahead. If I have an ache or pain, I apply an essential oil like lavender, geranium or wintergreen directly to the sore area and feel immediate relief. Usually after bathing, I put a drop of oil on each foot, rub it in, and I’m ready to face whatever challenges lie before me.

At breakfast, I’ll add a drop of lemon, peppermint, or ginger oil to a teapot of hot water and voila, instant herbal tea. Plus, I add oils to the washer, dryer, and dishwasher, use them in cleaning and disinfecting my home, and especially enjoy breathing them throughout the house in my diffuser.

I make it a habit to always carry a few bottles of essential oil with me in my purse and car, so I’m prepared for emergencies and stressful situations and of course for sharing the wonderful oils with people of all ages. The examples go on and on, so I love blogging about the oils too.

OB: For those who are interested, is there a website about using essential oils?

Di: Yes, at www.oil-testimonials.com, folks tell and share their essential oil stories.

OB: Why are essential oils the foundation of your Eleos business?

Di: Essential oils are the vehicle by which I aspire to accomplish my Eleos mission of being a steward over nature’s bounty and helping others to do likewise as we all improve and find balance spiritually, physically, and financially.

I was really blown away by this.
written by Justyna, February 14, 2008
I read and re-read your observation about the Garden of Eden, and it really stuck with me. I honestly never really thought much about the Garden and the fact that people were placed among flowering plants. Seems strange, but I'd never given that much thought. Thanks for bringing that home!

The Garden of Eden All Around Us
written by Di, February 16, 2008
Dear Justyna,

You're welcome, and thank you for your sensitive reply.

Even though we were sent out of Eden, we have amazingly beautiful portions of it everywhere we sow a seed, see the sunshine, or enjoy any part of God's bounty. It is truly all around us, and the more we stop and smell the flowers, the more we're able to discern this.

I'm so grateful to Glen Chancy for starting this site, and for you taking the time to reflect and respond.

Please keep in touch.

Many blessings,

Di

P.S. Besides writing on the Chemistry of Essential Oils, Dr. Stewart has also written a book on the Healing Oils of the Bible.

"Orthodox" Essential Oils
written by Angel brock, February 20, 2008
Your descriptions/explanations about essential oils are wonderful. So many people ask me, "What is an essential oil?" so now I can refer them to your interview, which is so eloquently stated.
Now if we could only diffuse the oils through the internet... LOL
You know they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words" which is very true, indeed, but we can say, also, "The fragrance of an essential oil is worth a thousand words!"
I mean, you and I know how geranium, rose, peppermint, spruce, lemon, lavender and frankincense all smell so heavenly, not to mention the blends of Christmas Spirit, 3 Wise Men, Peace and Calming, Believe, Humility, Envision, Sacred Mountain, Inner Child, SARA, Hope, White Angelica, Joy, Valor, Highest Potential, Harmony and Chivalry, but most people just don't know what we are talking about!
And I recently attended an event where there were commercial candles and someone said, "Smell this. What does it smell like?" To me, it had a sweet, but artificial scent, so I stated I did not know what it was. The person told me it was jasmine, but, unbeknownst to her, I had the authentic essence of jasmine in my purse - so flowery, exotic and distinct, and what she asked me to smell bore absolutely NO resemblance to the God-created, real thing!
Let the buyer beware and accept NO substitutions! These oils are tended so carefully from "seed to seal" (meticulous in every stage, from the organic seed through the distillation process and on to the manufacture, testing and final sealing of the essential oil in brown glass bottles) so they are "orthodox" (correct or true practice) essential oils in every sense of the word!

Young Living is Awesome
written by Maria Demetriou, April 16, 2008
I am so glad to have stumbled on your interview associated with this site. I have used Young Living for several years but never became a distributor and my friend through which I got them, has retired and moved away and didn't give anyone her forwarding info per her husbands request ( I think she stopped using th oils) Anyway, I didn't want to contact Young Living and get under someone random or clueless in advising me.
Not only are the benefits of application and ingestion amazing, but the sense of smell of essential oil verses other synthetic scents in mineral oil is huge.
Please contact me to discuss you and your business further.
