Angel: Hi, Di! We’re over halfway through the Great Fast, during which we often recite or read silently the Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim:

O Lord and Master of my life, take away from me the spirit to be lazy and neglectful, the desire for lust of power and idle talk. Grant me, your servant, the spirit of moderation, humility, patience and love.
Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and keep me from judging my brethren, for You are blessed now and forevermore. Amen

Di: What a beautiful prayer about the virtue of humility, not thinking less of yourself, but thinking about yourself less often.

Angel: In harmony with this, Humility is a Young Living essential oil blend of Rose, Rosewood, YlangYlang, Geranium, Melissa, Neroli, Frankincense, Spikenard, and Myrrh. When I smell Humility, it makes me slow down and feel peaceful.

In John 12:13, we read:
Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of Spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

On Holy Tuesday evening, in the Hymn of Kassiani, we hear:
The woman who had fallen into many sins, perceiving Your Divinity, O Lord, assumes the role of a Myrrhbearer; and lamenting, she brings the Myrrh before Your burial.

Angel: Let’s not forget Psalm 50 (51):
Purge me with Hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.

Di: Perhaps we should also mention the oil of Palo Santo (Holy or Sacred Wood), unique to Young Living Farms in Ecuador!

Angel: Good idea, as its name sounds like holy cross, and we celebrate the Sunday of the Holy Cross right in the middle of the Great Lent. Palo Santo (available as a single oil or found in my favorite roll-on, Deep Relief) is in the same botanical family as Frankincense, even though it is from the other side of the world. Frankincense is generally found in the Middle East.

Di: Finally we come to the king of herbs, Basil, whose fragrant flowers were flourishing around the true Holy Cross when found by Saints Constantine and Helen.

Angel: Of course! So altogether we’ve mentioned seven Essential Lenten Scents: Humility, Frankincense, Spikenard, Myrrh, Hyssop, Palo Santo and Basil.

Di: All of these oils are helpful for meditation and prayer and can enhance our spiritual lives when used in a spirit of humility and love. Orthodox Christianity involves all of our senses in prayer and worship!
